Comment on "Intermittent plate tectonics?".
Silver and Behn (Reports, 4 January 2008, p. 85) proposed that intermittent plate tectonics may resolve a long-standing paradox in Earth's thermal evolution. However, their analysis misses one important term, which subsequently brings their main conclusion into question. In addition, the Phanerozoic eustasy record indicates that the claimed effect of intermittency is probably weak.
متن کاملTectonics of the outer planet satellites
Tectonic features on the satellites of the outer planets range from the familiar, such as clearly recognizable graben on many satellites, to the bizarre, such as the ubiquitous double ridges on Europa, the twisting sets of ridges on Triton, or the isolated giant mountains rising from Io’s surface. All of the large and middle-sized outer planet satellites except Io are dominated by water ice nea...
متن کاملAfrotheria: plate tectonics meets genomics.
A frotheria is one of the most remarkable hypotheses in mammal evolution. It suggests that one-third of the orders of placental mammals form an ancient group that evolved on Africa when that continent was isolated from others through plate tectonics (1). Although this hypothesis has been predicted by molecular clock studies (2), evidence for it has emerged only in the last 3 years from phylogen...
متن کاملTerrestrial Planet Formation
The standard planetesimal model of terrestrial-planet formation is based on astronomical and cosmochemical observations, and the results of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In this model, planets grow in a series of stages beginning with the μm-sized dust grains observed in protoplanetary disks. Dust grains readily stick together to form mm-to-cm-sized aggregates, some of which...
متن کاملPlate Tectonics: A Paradigm Under Threat
This paper looks at the challenges confronting plate tectonics— the ruling paradigm in the earth sciences. The classical model of thin lithospheric plates moving over a global asthenosphere is shown to be implausible. Evidence is presented that appears to contradict continental drift, seafloor spreading, and subduction, as well as the claim that the oceanic crust is relatively young. The proble...
